SELF-IMAGE – A Creative Empowerment Journey

A 6-month storytelling project where young people become the directors of their own lives.

In SELF-IMAGE, adolescents aged 15–20 explore identity, self-expression, and the power of their voice – through the lens of a camera and the art of storytelling.
Whether girl or boy, introvert or outspoken – every participant learns to turn personal experience into visual narrative.

This is not just a film workshop. It’s a journey of creative confidence, self-awareness, and leadership.

A group of young girls in school uniforms lying on the grass in a circle with their legs and hands joined. The top left corner features a yellow logo with a sun-like design and the text "African Adolescent Girl Fund." Orange text at the bottom center says "LET'S MAKE MOVIES" with the letter "O" stylized as a white circle with rays.

What happens in the workshop?

The project begins with a one-week creative intensive, led by professional filmmakers and mentors. Through playful methods, peer work, reflection and hands-on exercises, students:

  • Build trust and group spirit

  • Explore what truly matters to them

  • Learn how to listen, ask bold questions, and tell honest stories

  • Practice using tablets to film documentaries and short fiction.

  • Develop in groups a personal short film idea rooted in their own experience

Over the next months, they continue their journey with online mentoring and peer sessions – from filming and editing to final presentations.

Goals

  • Strengthen confidence, creativity and self-expression

  • Promote media literacy and storytelling skills

  • Encourage critical thinking and purposeful teamwork

  • Empower students to find their voice and use it for impact

  • Create a safe space for personal growth and creative experimentation
